Toyota's commitment is to build products specifically for the markets in which they are sold. In the winter of 1974, Toyota's factory engineers travelled to the Canadian north to test the products extensively. This became an annual event that later on led to the adoption of comprehensive anti-rust protection, as well as heavy-duty batteries, starters, alternators and heaters. The vehicles are placed in a cold chamber at one of Toyota's test labs, afterwards they are transported to the Toyota Canada Cold Research Centre in Timmins, Northern Ontario for more scientific testing under actual local operating conditions, in this case often in sub-zero conditions, this is called Genchi-Genbutsu. At this point, the vehicles are still in the early stages of development, but Toyota also studies competitive vehicles and has recently introduced production models. |
